The Church of St. Mary Magdalene first appears on the second edition Ordnance Survey map of 1894 to 1899 (1). Today the building is a one storey brick built building with steep pitched roof, roof formed of two triangular slated sections sloping up towards the apex over the eastern apsidal end. Small pyramidal spire/bell tower towards eastern end of the roof with dormer window features. There is a crucifix adornment on the western gable top and a protruding entrance on the northern face of the building with arched doorway and its own pointed porch roof. Western gable end features a large arched window in two lights with rose-shaped window over the top, panes separated by carved stone (2). The church once housed a war memorial plaque which is now located in nearby Brafferton Village Hall (NZ 29334 21010). The church closed in 1979 and is now a private residence (3).
