Drill Hall, Parklands, Castle Eden (Castle Eden)
The Drill Hall at Parklands, Castle Eden is recorded as being used as the 15th Durham VA Hospital during the First World War (1). The Parklands area is associated as being developed by Rowland Burdon in the late 1800's, he certainly opened up nearby land for use as a rifle range in 1860 (2). The buildings where the Drill Hall is located show up on the second edition Ordnance Survey map of 1894-1899 (3) and are located within their own grounds to the east of the rifle range, possibly built initially as a private house with farm buildings. Modern aerial photographs of the area show that the complex of buildings known as Parklands Court is now located here (4). Whether or not there are extant remains of the Drill Hall is unknown.
