Ropner Convalescent Home, Middleton One Row (Middleton One Row)
Ropner Convalescent Home, founded about 1894 (1) is recorded as being used as the 24th Durham VA Hospital during WW1 (2). The building shows up originally on the second edition Ordnance Survey map of 1894-1899 as Pemberton House (3), renamed Ropner Convalescent Home on the third edition OS map 1919-1926 (4). The Home was closed in 1999 (2) to be converted into private appartments that appear on modern aerial photographs (5).
Brick extension on the eastern side of the building was added c1950 and dedicated as a Second World War memorial with the addition of a brass plaque (6-7). Location of plaque now unknown since demolition of the building.
