Site Details

Formal garden to the east of Elemore Hall, Durham (Elemore)

A formal garden lay to the east of Elemore Hall.

A design for the garden is shown on an estate plan of 1750 but the first detailed plan of the garden is the 1860 Ordnance Survey first edition.

By the later 20th century the garden was redeveloped as playing courts for the school that occupied the hall. In 2013 a series of trial trenches were excavated within the former garden. These revealed evidence of a central path, buried garden soils and at least one planting pit.

This site is included on the Local List of Historic Parks, Gardens and Designed Landscapes and is an important part of the County's cultural heritage. The site boundaries should be considered informative rather than definitive, and in some cases are still mapped as 'uncertain'. These boundaries represent the current understanding of where the main features of the asset are likely to lie within. For more information contact landscape@durham.gov.uk
