Burtreeford Watermill, Stanhope (Cowshill)

This is a large three-floored watermill that was built into the bank of the River Wear so its top floor was level with the top of the riverbank. Its overshot wheel was driven by water from two streams, viz., Killhope Burn and Sedling Burn. This watermill was built in the early 19th century and was used continuously until 1939, and then intermittently until c. 1950. Its machinery was finally removed in 1990, and was then converted into a residential property in 1994.
