Westgate, Slit Mine (Westgate)

19th century lead mine at Westgate Slit
These are the extensive remains of a mid 19th century lead mine. There are the remains of washing floors, a level, bouseteams, a main shaft and the foundations of a steam engine. Traces of a number dams and water channels can also be seen. The site was worked until 1882, although most production from Low Slit had ceased by 1872. The site was connected to a branch of the Stanhope and Tyne Railway. This is a Scheduled Ancient Monument protected by law.
