Rowley (Rowley)
The village of Rowely used to be known as Cold Rowley. The name comes from the Old English meaning 'Rough Clearing'. The village was first recorded in 1229. The baptist chapel was founded in 1652 and has been in use ever since. Rowley railway station was built in 1867, but has now been moved to Beamish Open Air Museum.
