Brandon Walls, Rookhope (Rookhope)
The monument of Brandon Walls mine includes the ruined structures of a lead mine with a small associated ore works and a terrace of miner's cottages. Features include the standing remains of a large wheelpit, with a shaft and settings for pumping machinery; the buried and earthwork remains of an ore processing area; and the standing ruins of a mine smithy. The mine was operational by 1850 and was worked by the Brandon Lead Mining Company from 1862 until its failure in 1872 when it was taken over by the Rookhope Valley Mining Company. The mine shaft was closed in 1882 and was finally abandoned circa 1903. Worked Brandon Walls Vein, has a winding shaft at NY 9487 4125. Output between 1850-86 was 1354 tons lead concentrates. (1)
Lime kilns, comprising two pots, having four associated draw arches. Construction is of stone, with rough coursing. Pots are rectangular in section, with semi-circular ends. The arch is round in elevational shape. There is a branch rail track to the base of the kiln. (3)
