Mining has probably occurred in this area since the 12th century. However, the earliest remains to be seen here are probably the 17th century shafts near South Grain, and a possible hush of the same date at Greencleugh. Later 19th century remains can be seen as well, There is an ore-crushing site at Frazer's Grove. The site was worked until the early 1990s for fluorspar. (1)

Originally an 18th-19th century lead and iron mine with features including water channels, shafts and an area of hushes. Several of the original 18th-19th century buildings survive though many are in a ruined condition. There are also several added in the 20th century. It is now the largest producer of commercial fluorspar in the North Pennines. (7)
