Farmstead and Field System, Bracken Rigg, Holwick (Holwick)

Holwick, Bracken Rigg © DCC 2001
Holwick, Bracken Rigg © DCC 2001
This is the site of a small Bronze Age settlement. There is a large enclosure containing the foundations of a round house. Traces of a number of fields can be seen down the hill to the south. The main house was dated to circa 1550BC by radiocarbon dating. This site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument, protected by law (8).

A prehistoric settlement on Bracken Rigg consisting of a single hut circle within a complex of rubble-banked enclosures. Excavation of the hut circle produced flint tools and pottery. Charcoal from that excavation gave a radio-carbon date within the Bronze Age. Scheduled (10).
