Modern Pillbox 700 Meters East of Kinley Hill, Dawdon Blast Beach (Seaham)

Pillbox of variant type constructed 1940 to 1941, of circular or oval shape, located on the east side of the railway embankment north-west of Hawthorn Junction, on the junction of the coastal rail line and the branch line to the old Dawdon Colliery, on the clifftop overlooking the upper beach at Dawdon Blast Beach. The pillbox is constructed of concrete sandbags with a corrugated iron roof underneath a slab of concrete, and five or six embrasures. The site was extant when surveyed in 1997 and was then partly obscured by a soil covering. The World War II pillbox is visible as a structure on air photographs.
