There used to be stepping stones across the River Tees at this point. In 1871, they were replaced by a three span bridge with wrought iron lattice girders resting on masonry piers. This was washed away by the 1881 flood. The current iron lattice bridge has a centre span of 51.8 metres, and two shorter spans of 9.5 metres. This bridge was repaired in 1989.
