This milestone, now protected as a Listed Building was probably erected around 1830 for the Alston Road Trust turnpike across from Alston to Middleton. The stone is a painted slab, giving both the directions and distances for Alston (in Cumbria) and Middleton. The 1830s was part of a great expansion and repair of the roads in the area; much being sponsored by the Lead-mining companies of the area.
