The church of St John, Stanhope was first recorded in 1465, but was rebuilt by Sir Walter Blackett in the 18th century. (1)

The present church, built in 1752 is on the site of a Medieval chapel, extant in 1465, when a chantry is mentioned there. The church has a plan of West tower, galleried nave, chancel and North vestry. The chancel was extended in 1881-3 by Ewan Christian. (3)
