An Anglo-Saxon church dating from the time of Bede, circa 700 AD. It is built of reused Roman masonry, incorporating fragments of Anglo-Saxon crosses and a sundial. 7th century with 14th century porch and some 13th and 19th century windows. Eaves raised at unknown date. Restored 1875-80 by RJ Johnson and 1965 by Sir Albert Richardson. 2-cell plan of chancel and nave with south porch. Archaeological excavation in 1968 revealed sites of west annexe and of north porticus to chancel. The church may possibly be built on the site of a Roman building with a hypocaust, possibly a villa.
