These buildings, a Listed Building, are noted as being designed by the famous local architect George Gordon Hoskins of Darlington (1864-1907), for the equally famous Backhouse Bank in 1870. It is typical of the period when a number of major bank buildings were designed in the then fashionable Gothic Revival. Decoration is both colourful and projects forward of the walls in places. Some of the interior details have been removed - but the outside is what has been called "Hoskinian Gothic".
