Stone House, Stanhope, is mentioned in a document of 1608, but it had been converted into cottages before the 17th century. It was originally built as the Rectory; after a new Rectory was built on Front Street in 1697 (rebuilt again in 1821) it was sub-divided into two houses, only recently re-united.

In appearance it seems to be a medieval pele tower. It has small windows strongly fortified with iron bars in the upper floors, but larger 17th century windows on the ground floor. It is a Grade II listed building protected by law.

Dendrochronology helps to conclude that the building was constructed around AD 1533.

Alleged to be a former rectory and possible pele, though the walls are thin.
