This milestone is a Listed Building protected by law. These were commonly erected, sometimes specifically stated to be erected by law, as part of the road systems such as turnpikes. The turnpike here ran from Durham to Bowes (then in the North Riding of Yorkshire). Distances are given for both as the traveller from either would approach them.
