This building is an entrance lodge for the nearby Witton Castle It is a Listed Building and probably dates to the earlier part of the 18th century. Like an earlier castle this has battlements with a porticullis-style entrance arch and loops. The lodge would have never been intended to take part in a defensive scheme - though it would allow only limited access to a select few to the grounds of the larger Witton Castle. Though these appearances are whimsical the building did actually serve a purpose - it cannot therefore strictly be called a folly.
