War Memorial in New Seaham Welfare Park © DCC 2004
Memorial to World War I and World War II (WW2), originally unveiled 1923 with WW2 additions in 1948. Tall sandstone monument with commemorative tablets of grey granite, topped with a winged figure of Liberty holding a torch aloft. Two-stage square pedestal. Tablet on front face of upper pedestal carries the dedication: "This memorial / was erected by the / workmen and friends / of New Seaham / in sacred remembrance / of their comrades / who fell in the / Great War / 1914-1918"; this is flanked by two slightly larger than life-size figures of a DLI infantryman and a sailor of the Royal Navy. Top of the front face of lower pedestal has a carving of the R.A.F. insignia with the names of those who fell in WW1 on a plaque below, listed in three columns. The lower pedestal is flanked by two short pillars, each bearing a plaque on an angled face - the names of those who died in WW2 are listed on these in single columns. An additional plaque at the base of the monument between the WW2 pillars has a list of further names, not clear to which conflict these belong. The whole is set on two shallow steps and inside a kerbed area of gravel within the Park.

This is a Grade II listed building, thus protected by law. (1 - 5)
