Church of St Brandon AKA St Brandon's Church, Brancepeth Castle, Brancepeth (Brancepeth)
The church of St Brandon is the parish church of Brancepeth, situated in the grounds of Brancepeth Castle. The tower is of late 12th century date, whilst the nave dates to the late 13th or early 14th century. Rebuilding and additional building took place from the 15th to the 19th century. The chancel roof was replaced by Robert Barker in 1638. The chapel is built of dressed sandstone and the rest of the building is constructed of rubble stone with lead roofs. It once had many beautiful wooden carvings, but the church was extensively damaged by a fire of 16 Sept 1998 and much of the internal decoration destroyed.
The church contained a number of dedication plaques to fallen soldiers from various conflicts, most of which were damaged in the fire and are now stored elsewhere (2). This is a Grade I listed building protected by law.
