Railway Workmen's Institute and forecourt walls. Dated 1911 (on keystone above doorway) for the North-Eastern Railway Company. Grey-red brick (3 rows of stretchers and 1 row of Flemish bond) with light-red brick and artificial stone dressings. Welsh slate roof and brick chimneys. Grey-red brick walls with sandstone coping. Main building with attached wing to right. Neo-Georgian style.

Main building has 2 storeys. Taller, open-pedimented end bays break forward and have projecting brick quoins to ground floor and banded pilasters above. Right end bay has later C20 double doors and fanlight in pedimented doorcase with alternating brick and stone jambs, dated keystone and plaque inscribed: NE RAILWAY INSTITUTE. 15-pane sashes have moulded sills and aprons and gauged brick and stone flat arches with keystones. Left bay has ground-floor window under pediment; upper windows of end bays have segmental heads and surrounds with swept, carved bases and scrolled pediments. Pilastered bay divisions to first floor of 5-bay centre section; central upper window has carved stone apron with swag and fruit. Dentilled eaves cornice of wood. Hipped roof has 2 axial chimneys, rising from middle of front span, and 2 late C20 dormers.

Single-storey, 5-bay wing has 15-pane sashes in similar surrounds. Taller, central bay breaks forward and has semicircular relieving arch above window and low parapet with ramped coping. Roof has central louvre, on ridge, with cupola and finial.

Main building has 4-bay left return. Wing has canted, one-bay right return with Diocletian window above. Forecourt walls: Pair of low, square piers, in front of right end doorway, are linked by short ogee-plan sections to low, stepped front wall. Rounded corner to left return section. Walls have chamfered stone coping. (1)
