This suspension bridge was built in circa 1820 for Duke of Cleveland, replacing an earlier bridge on site, which was erected in 1741 and was said to have been the earliest in Europe. Another earlier bridge, built in 1704, was built by the miners. The bridges were built to enable lead miners, who lived at Holwick, to reach the mines at Middleton.
