This milestone is a Listed Building protected by law. These were commonly erected, sometimes specifically stated to be erected by law, as part of the road systems such as turnpikes. The turnpike here ran from Bowes (then in the North Riding of Yorkshire, now County Durham) to Durham. Distances are given for both as the traveller from either would approach them - though the placenames have been abbreviated so as to read B12 and D17 respectively.
