Interior, undated 2009
This is a large and handsome chapel which stands as testimony to the strength of Primitive Methodism in the Wear valley. It has largely escaped 20th century alteration and remains in relatively good condition. It was founded in 1824 and enlarged in 1871 to a design by George Race Jnr.
The Chapel was built in 1871 adjacent to an earlier Chapel, which it replaced. (2)
A pipe organ was installed in March 1901 by HJ Nelson & Co, previously removed from the nearby Westgate North Road Chapel (3)
The Chapel ceased to be used for regular services in 2007. (4,5)
