This milestone is a Listed Building protected by law. These were commonly erected, sometimes specifically stated to be erected by law, as part of the road systems such as turnpikes. The turnpike here ran from Richmond (in North Yorkshire) to Staindrop - the stone gives the distance for both as there are no other major centres or junctions along the route.
