This is the keep of Durham Castle- it is now part of a college for the university. It was built in 1345-81 for Bishop Hatfield and was rebuilt in 1839-40 by Salvin for the university. It is roughly octagonal in plan and stands on a high motte. This is a Grade I Listed Building protected by law.
