Witton Hall & Wall AKA St Mary Magdalenes Hospital And Chapel, Witton Gilbert (Witton-le-Wear)
Witton Hall. This is probably the grange of a late 12th century leper hospital built by Gilbert la Ley. It was rebuilt in the late 14th century. It is now a house and was heavily altered in the 18th century. This is a Grade II* Listed Building protected by law.
Witton Gilbert Hall, built in the 18th century, was built on the site of, and incorporates a Norman arch from, the leper hospital. The hospital was founded between 1154-80 and dissolved in 1532. The former hospital chapel has been demolished.
