Elstob Deserted Medieval Village, Preston-le-Skerne

This is the site of the deserted medieval village of Elstob, which was first recorded in 1242. Its name possibly derives from the old English expression for elder stub or elder tree. A number of slight earthworks are visible, but these may be the remains of 19th century farm buildings rather than the medieval village. Ridge and furrow survives nearby.

Earthworks were visible on aerial photographs taken in 1946 and on later air photography taken in 1995 show the earthworks were still extant. Earthworks indicate building platforms, embanked enclosures, crofts and fishponds. The earthworks are associated with medieval and post medieval ridge and furrow some of which has been levelled.
