Site Details

Iron Forge remains, Redgate Shield, Hamsterley Forest, South Bedburn (Hamsterley Forest)

This is probably the date of a 15th century iron ore processing site. The site consists of earthworks covered with grass and trees. A dam and a channel upstream can also be seen.

The reputed site of a 15th century water powered iron bloomery located at the confluence of Cloudlam and Sharnberry Becks. A double dam that is currently silted up, has been observed on the west bank of Sharnberry Beck is believed to be a part of this venture. An extensive search could not locate the site but is said to contain the earthwork remains of slag heaps containing slag material consistent with both secondary forging and smelting. (1)
