Grindon Deserted Medieval Village, High Grindon

These are the remains of the deserted medieval village of High Grindon. Although its earthworks used to be visible in a field to the northwest of the modern farm on this site, all traces on the ground seem to have vanished beneath the ploughsoil. The remains consisted of a series of banks and ditches forming small enclosures, and a hollow way running along the east and north sides; fish pond, platforms and the foundations of a demolished building. Traces of these features can still be seen from aerial photographs taken in 1946, later photography taken in 1999 show the earthworks are no longer extant. The settlement was documented in the early 15th century.
