Market Cross, Market Place, Stanhope (Stanhope)

Post-medieval market cross at Stanhope (County Durham)
Post-medieval market cross at Stanhope (County Durham)
This is a 19th century market cross standing on a stone base with four steps. On the top step is a carving, which says 'Market Granted 1669, Cross Restored 1871'. It is therefore possible that the stone base may date back to 1669. The original cross, replaced in 1871, is now in the churchyard of St Thomas' Church. This structure is a Grade II listed building. (1)

Market cross erected in 1669 to comemorate the the re-founding of Stanhope market. It was restored with a modern shaft and head set into the original base in 1871. The original shaft was moved to the churchyard (see NY 93 NE 188). This was also the site of the stocks of which no trace remains. The cross is both scheduled and listed. (9)
