Lumley Castle, Chester-le-Street, County Durham (Lumley Castle)

Lumley Castle 2005
Lumley Castle 2005
This is Lumley Castle. The present building surrounds a central square courtyard, and there is a large tower at each corner. The towers are rectangular with their greatest length east and west. The courtyard is entered by a vaulted passage on the east side. The castle as changed little since it was built in the 14th century. The only major alterations have been the replacement of the medieval windows with some of 16th and 18th century date. The current building replaces an earlier manor house, the remains of this house are built into the buildings on the east side of the courtyard. There is evidence from historic records that a chapel was built here in 1432, though its precise location has been lost. This is a Grade 1 listed building, thus protected by law.
