Gilmonby Hoard, Bowes (Gilmonby)
A hoard of late Bronze Age metalwork was found near Plover Hall, Gilmonby in 1980. Over twenty-seven bronze axes, thirty-seven spearheads, fourteenswords, tools, parts of a cauldron, ornaments, nine copper ingots and several pieces of Iron. It was probably buried between 1000BC to 800BC. A hoard such as this may have been buried for religious reasons, possibly as an offering to the gods.
