Later Prehistoric or Iron Age hillfort, Barnard Castle, Marwood (Barnard Castle)

Barnard Castle, Marwood © DCC 2007
Barnard Castle, Marwood © DCC 2007
Defined by a ditch with two flanking banks which enclose an area about 80 metres in diameter at the end of a steep-sided spur of this hill turns this into a possible later Prehistoric or Iron Age hillfort. There is a possible entrance on the north side. A probable entrance in the centre of the ditch leads into a large enclosure. Within the enclosure are the remains of a rectangular building, visible as a slight depression. This is believed to represent later occupation of the site, probably in the early medieval period. This site is overlain by later Medieval, ridge and furrow to the east of the building. This is a Scheduled Monument, protected by law.
