Wearhead (Wearhead)
This village stands at the head of the River Wear, which is where it gets its name. A farm is recorded here as early as 1300, but a village did not exist here until the late 18th century when most of the houses were built from local sandstone. In the early 19th century lead mining became more common and the village again expanded.
