Old Richmond AKA Barforth Deserted Medieval Settlement, Teesdale (Barforth)

This may be the site of the Medieval village of Brierford, mentioned in the Domesday Book as 'Brierforde'. It has often been known locally as 'Old Richmond', though the reasons for this are unclear. A number of earthworks can be seen, and these may be the remains of medieval houses. A church, a dovecote and a hall all stand nearby, and probably marked the location of the manor. This is a Scheduled Ancient Monument protected by law (1).

Earthwork and building remains of a deserted Medieval village or probable manorial complex. (6)
