An enclosed settlement was identified within a field to the north of Laurel Lane as a cropmark noted on aerial photographs. (1)

The site was subjected to a geophysical survey and trial trenches as part of a community archaeology excavation in 2012. These revealed enclosure ditches of the settlement and a round house outside of the enclosed area. The majority of the dating evidence consisted of pottery dated to the Iron Age. A fragment of a beehive quern, a potential fragment of saddle quern and a fragment of a jet bangle were amongst the significant finds (6).

Further excavation was carried out in 2013. This add further information about the settlement, suggesting it had gone out of use before the Roman Period (9).

A multi-phased site, dating to the Iron Age/ Roman period and consisting of a series of ditched enclosures, visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs, centred at NZ 2995 3065. The largest enclosure, measures 104m by 88m, and contained within it are two circular enclosures measuring 15m and 10m in diameter respectively, possible representing domestic round houses. This large enclosure abuts a smaller rectilinear enclosure measuring 52m by 54m. The boundary ditches of the latter appear to have been re-cut at least three times and on each occasion along a slightly changed alignment. Within this feature, centred at NZ 3000 3067 is a circular pit with a 2m diameter. Cutting through the rectilinear feature is a 32m by 23m curvilinear enclosure, centred at NZ 2997 3067, although it is not clear if this feature pre or post dates it. Finally, a boundary ditch is visible to the north and may represent further enclosures or field boundaries. The site is situated on a knoll of higher ground.
