Atherton Street, Durham city (Durham City)

Atherton St area of Durham 1973
Atherton St area of Durham 1973
Atherton Street was built in the 19th century, named after Sir William Atherton, an MP for Durham (elected 1852) who later became Solicitor General. It was the location of Hauxwell's Iron Foundry and Engineering Works, one of the best-known firms in the city. The foundry and part of Atherton Street were demolished around 1970.
