A new infirmary, known as Durham County Hospital, was built at North Road in 1850 at a cost of £7,518. The hospital did not open until 1853. The original hospital block was an Elizabethan-style H-shaped structure with a separate laundry to the rear. In 1867 a two storey wing, housing male and female wards, was added to the north-west corner of the main building at a cost of £2,400. In 1886 three new wings were added comprising additional wards to the west of the 1867 wing; an outpatients wing to the north-east of the main building with the service block being re-built. A new entrance vestibule may have been added at this time. A new mortuary (H49067) was added behind the service block in 1896. A nurses hostel (H49069) was added to the south west of the main building in 1914 (and extended in 1932 & again in 1938) and the main building was extended to the east to house an operating theatre. A major new wing housing outpatients, a x-ray department and further wards was added to the south of the main block in 1938. A wooden building (H49071) was added to the north east boundary of the site at this time.
The building was sensitively restored recently, that included the removal of intrusive additions enhancing its character and visual appeal. (12)
