A school was mentioned in Darlington in 1416 and a grammar school existed in 1546. The buildings had been rebuilt in 1650-52 but it was closed down in 1813. A new school was set up in Duke Street. The old school stood at the east end of the church- the area became part of the burial ground once it had been demolished.
