Maiden Castle, Durham City (Durham City)
Maiden Castle is an Iron Age promontory fort. Archaeologists exploring found that the hill had been fortified two or three times in the medieval period, probably in the 15th or 16th century. This is a Scheduled Ancient Monument protected by law.
