Garmondsway Deserted Medieval Village (Kelloe)

This is the site of the deserted medieval village of Garmondsway. In the early 11th century the Anglo-Saxon king Cnut left this village to walk barefoot to the shrine of St Cuthbert. In 1183 the village was given to a leper hospital in Sherburn to provide it with food and an income.

The earthwork remains of part of this village can still be seen on aerial photographs, with a small part of the northern section of the site destroyed by ploughing. The site consists of a series of tofts, crofts, banks, boundary banks/ ditches and mounds.

. A group of rectangular enclosures are visible. These contain the buried remains of medieval houses. This site is a Scheduled Monument, protected by law.
