Deserted Medieval Village of Thrislington

This is the site of the deserted medieval village of Thrislington. It was first recorded in 1208, when it was known as Thurstanton. It was being being deserted from the early 16th century and had disappeared by the 17th or 18th century, when the only building at the site was Thrislington Hall. Both the Hall and the village were excavated by archaeologists before the remains were destroyed by quarrying in the 1970s.

Before they were destroyed, the remains survived as a series of earthworks, comprising linear banks and ditches forming crofts, boundary ditches, mounds and boundary banks arranged on either side of a road, and are also associated with ridge and furrow. These marked the sites of houses, gardens and roads.

Rescue excavations in 1973 found the remains of several buildings, including one with a stone cellar, and the possible Saxon-Norman stone manor house, which was first occupied in the 11th century and still in use until the 14th century. A 14th century chapel and a 16th century limekiln were also recorded.
