A large rounded rock stands on the bank of an enclosure (H5620). It has a number of cup and ring marks on it. These carvings were probably created in the Early Bronze Age or Late Neolithic. The purpose of these carvings is not clear though they may have had a religious function. This is a Scheduled Monument, protected by law (3).

Bronze Age cup and ring carved rock and prehistoric enclosure on west side of Scale Knoll Gill, 410m south west of Haythwaite, Barningham Moor. The carving is on the east vertical face of the rock and consists of a cup with four rings and a long groove, seven other cups with a branching groove from two of them, two other descending grooves, and two possible cups. The subrectangular enclosure is thought to be prehistoric in date and is interpreted as an agricultural enclosure used for the control of stock. Panel recorded as part of The Northumberland and Durham Rock Art Project (NADRAP) 2005-2008 (8).
