Round cairn, 400m SSW of Bolam church (Belsay)

[NZ 09398222] Tumulus. (1)

A mutilated turf-covered round barrow 1.5m high. Published survey (25 inch) revised. (2)

Considerable stone core inside barrow. A large upright gatepost sticks out from the centre. (3)

NZ 0940 8222. Round cairn 400m SSW of Bolam Church. Scheduled RSM No 25149. The remains of a round cairn of Bronze Age date are situated on a low E-W ridge. Thestone and earth cairn is 11m in diameter and stands to a maximum height of 1.5m. A large hole in the centre of the cairn is the result of partial antiquarian excavation. An upright gatepost projects from the centre of the mound, clearly indicating the cairn's subsequent reuse. (4)
