Shaftoe Crags Iron Age settlement (Capheaton)

[NZ 05158170] Camp. (1)

'Shaftoe Crag'. A cliff fort with multiple ramparts, approximately 1.5 acres in area. (2)

The work is 514ft north west-south east and 231ft north-south. There are no defences on the west and south sides, which are precipitous. On the north there are three ramparts ranging from 3ft 6ins to 8ft 6ins in height, and the interior is divided north-south by an earth and stone bank. Three gaps occur in the ramparts, one near the west end, another in the middle, and a third on the east which is probably the original entrance. (3)

Listed as pre-Roman Iron Age multivallate [forts, settlements and enclosures]. (4)

A well-preserved fort. Published survey (25 inch) revised. (5)

SAM management agreement. (6)

Ramparts in good condition, though cut by modern road on north. Traces of internal divisions. Hollow ways lead into the site. (7)

NZ 052817. Shaftoe Crags promontory fort. Multivallate defences. Two ramparts and ditches with an outer scarp bank, enclose the north and east sides. Entrance was on the east. (8)

Detailed 1:500 scale survey in 1986 by P Sellers, B Butcher, M Maddison and S Brown. (9)

Survey by Northumberland Archaeological Group in 1986. Tri-vallate hillfort on a sandstone plateau at 190m OD with a sheer crag forming its south-western edge. Visible on aerial photographs. (Description of ramparts and entrances). (10)

NZ 0514 8169. Defended settlement 450m NNW of Ferney Chesters. Scheduled RSM No 25147. The roughly oval enclosure is 166m E-W by 70m N-S within three ramparts on the N and NE sides. The rampart is thought to have originally extended around the E side but is now gone; the S and W sides are naturally defended. The stone and earth ramparts are between 7m and 8m wide and 0.6m to 2.5m high. Original entrances are visible in the E and NW sides of the enclosure. Within the enclosure a wall of large upright slabs divides the interior into a small W end and a larger E end. (11)

Geophysical survey (resistivity and magnetic) carried out October to December 1993. Any archaeological features largely masked by geology. Possible pits located by magnetic survey. (12)(13)
