Flint scraper (Broomley and Stocksfield)
A large flint scraper of unusual type, 3-7/8ins long x 2-3/8ins wide, broken across the middle and repaired, was dug up in the garden path of his home by Master John Bulmer of Shanklin, Stocksfield. Mr R A Smith of the British Museum, could recognise both Mousterian and Mesolithic elements in it, although in view of it apparent provenance, the former date seems unlikely. Mr J G D Clark of Cambridge said the flake certainly had a Levalloisean appearance, but could attach no chronological significance to it. The builder of the house procured both sand and gravel 5-6 years ago from a site on the south side of the River Tyne near Eltringham [name centred NZ 07556281] where the material is worked out of the river bed. Donated to the Museum of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle on 29th March 1933. (1)
