Todlaw Pike North (Hepple)
Prehistoric Occupation Sites - Unenclosed Stone Huts. Site No 14. Todlaw Pike NY 904961. 253m OD. Sheltered valley. Three huts with a fourth, 200m to the north west (100m north of Todlaw Pike Cairnfield). (1)
Centred at NY 90329616 on a slight ridge running north-west/south-east in a shallow valley is a group of three hut circles. All are about 4.5m diameter between the centres of low turf-covered stone walls 1m wide and 0.2m high. No definite entrances are evident.
About 165m to the north-west at NY 90189625 is a circular structure 6.5m diameter between the centres of a well constructed wall of large stones, now partly collapsed. Set into a south-west facing slope it has a well defined entrance in the south-south-west. This is possibly a hut circle but about 50m to the west are another two near circular stony structures and mounds (not antiquities and probably built for Army training) and it is possible that this may be associated with them.
There is no apparent field system in this area and it is possible that the three huts are outliers to the system (NY 99 NW 10) about 250m to the south-west. Surveyed at 1:10,000. (2)
Three unenclosed round stone houses. (3)
NY 904961. Todlaw Pike North unenclosed settlement. (4)
Nothing is very clear here on lidar imagery, but two large mounds at NY90239619 may be part of the complex. Could be Bronze Age rather than Iron Age. Other nearby mounds may also be significant but it is impossible to be sure from lidar imagery alone. Several hollows in the area are presumably shell holes from military training. (5)
