Medieval fish pond near Ray Cottages, Kirkwhelpington (Kirkwhelpington)
Three short banks and ditches near the railway, at Ray Cottage, probably medieval. (1)
NY 96708556. (2)
Two of the banks are the surviving sides of a typical medieval fish pond. Published survey (25 inch) revised. The third is an old field boundary. (3)
NY 9670 8556. Fishpond 400m SW of Ray Cottages. Scheduled RSM No 21006. A medieval fishpond situated to the SW of Ray bastle (NY 98 NE 13) and to the NW of the deserted medieval hamlet of Ray (NY 98 NE 14). The fishpond, orientated N-S, is of simple form and consists of a single rectangular pond 40m by 7.5m with a flat bottom. Banks surround the pond on the E and W sides, standing up to 2.1m and averaging 7.5m wide. The N end of the pond is delimited by a scarped bank and the S end by a slight bank with gaps in the SE and SW corners; it is here that leats leading from the nearby stream and controlled by sluices would have controlled water flowing into and out of the pond. The remains of a dividing bank 3.5m wide are visible half way along the pond. Immediately to the W of the pond and parallel to it there is an earthen bank 3m wide, probably associated with the pond though of uncertain nature. It is likely that the construction and use of the fishpond is closely associated with the occupation of the bastle, the focus for the medieval settlement at Ray. (4)
